TORONTO – Toronto Mayor John Tory resigned after admitting he had having an affair with an office staff. Toronto is the largest city in Canada.
Tory told a news conference late Friday night local time that he had developed a relationship with a staff member in his office.
The 68-year-old official is known as a staunch moderate conservative — a stark contrast to previous Toronto Mayor Rob Ford, whose tenure was marred by scandals involving public drinking and drug use.

“I realized that allowing this relationship to develop was a serious error in my judgment,” Tory said after the Toronto Star reported on the cheating scandal.
“It came at a time when Barb, my wife of more than 40 years and I was experiencing a lot of time apart while I carried out my responsibilities during the pandemic,” he said, as quoted by AP, Sunday (2/2/2023).
“As a result, I have decided to step down as mayor so I can take time to reflect on my mistakes and do the work of rebuilding my family’s trust.”
Tory was first elected mayor in 2014, in part because of promises to return honor to office after Ford’s tumultuous tenure. Tory recently won a third term.
Rob Ford’s four-year term as mayor of Canada’s largest city was marred by scandals over his drinking and cocaine use. He later died of a rare cancer.
Tory said he was very sorry to the people of Toronto.
