BUENOS AIRES – Authority Argentina said that more than 5,000 pregnant women of origin Russia have entered the country in recent months, including 33 people on a flight last Thursday.
According to Argentina’s migration agency, the last arrivals of the pregnant women from Russia all occurred in the last weeks of pregnancy.
It is believed the women wanted to make sure their baby was born in Argentina in order to get Argentine citizenship.
The head of Argentina’s migration agency, Florencia Carignano, told local media that of the 33 women who arrived in the Argentine capital on a single flight last Thursday, three were detained because of “problems with their documentation.” They joined three others who had arrived earlier in the day.
He said the Russian women initially claimed they were visiting Argentina as tourists.
“In this case it was detected that they did not come here to engage in tourism activities. They admit it themselves,” he said as quoted by the BBC, Sunday (12/2/2023).
He said Russian women wanted their children to have Argentine citizenship because it gave them more freedom than a Russian passport.
Having Argentinian children also speeds up the citizenship process for parents.

“The problem is they come to Argentina, register their children as Argentinian and leave. Our passports are very secure all over the world. This allows (passport holders) to enter 171 countries without a visa,” explained Carignano.
