Since last November 1, 2022, James Gunn and Peter Safran serve as co-CEOs of DC Studios. It is in his hands to establish the future of the DC Universe on the big screen, series, animation and video games.
In fact, last week, James Gunn presented the first stage of the dc universewith various film and television projects inspired by the pages of DC Comics.
Over the past three months, Gunn and Safran have scrapped previous projects of DC Comics to “clean” the slate and be able to establish a shared universe with a defined vision. In the process, neither of them has been cut when it comes to commenting on the previous management of the DC Universe – then known as the DC Extended Universe.
Peter Safran defined the Batgirl movie that Warner Bros. canceled as an “impossible to release” film. In the producer’s opinion, the film starring Leslie Grace was not capable of competing in theaters.
As for James Gunn, he noted that the management of DC Films—previous to DC Studios—”gave out IPs like they were candy.”
James Gunn and Peter Safran make several Warner Bros. Discovery executives uncomfortable
Despite already charting the early stages of the DC Universe, Warner Bros. Discovery isn’t exactly happy with the way the DC Studios co-chairs talk about their pre-arrival management.
The Hollywood Reporter collects that the words of James Gunn and Peter Safran have upset some executives of the parent company quite a bit. And it is that, although there has been an important selection of positions, some people are still part of the different divisions of Warner that once collaborated with DC Films.
Whether they are more or less correct in their form, Gunn and Safran’s statements come to point out a problem that everyone saw at Warner regarding the DC franchise.
What remains to be seen is whether the mandate of James Gunn and Peter Safran manages to straighten the course of the DC Universe on all fronts to demonstrate with actions, not words, that they know how to run a franchise as powerful, as well as mistreated, as it’s DC.
