WASHINGTON – US Agency for International Development ( USAID ) said on Thursday (9/2/2023), that his party provided USD 85 million (Rp 1.2 trillion) of urgent humanitarian assistance to Turki and Syria after earthquake killer this week.
“USAID provides emergency food and shelter to refugees and newly displaced people, winter supplies to help families weather the cold, critical health services to provide trauma support, safe drinking water to prevent illness, and hygiene and sanitation assistance to keeping people safe and healthy,” the agency said in a release.

The statement recalled US efforts to assist Turkey and Syria after the earthquake, adding 200 people including disaster experts as well as 159 search and rescue members and 12 dogs had arrived in Turkey.
“The United States remains committed to supporting the Türkiye government’s response and providing life-saving assistance to the Syrian people in response to this devastating disaster,” he added.
The magnitude 7.7 and 7.6 earthquake, centered in Kahramanmaras province, was felt Monday by 13 million people in 10 provinces, including Adana, Adiyaman, Diyarbakir, Gaziantep, Hatay, Kilis, Malatya, Osmaniye and Sanliurfa.
Several countries in the region, including Syria and Lebanon, felt the strong tremors that hit Turkey in less than 10 hours.

The death toll from the deadliest earthquake in 20 years in Turkey and northwestern Syria has reached more than 23,700, four days after the disaster struck.
The toll from the 7.8 magnitude quake, which hit in the early hours of Monday, as well as several strong aftershocks, has surpassed the more than 17,000 people killed in 1999 when an equally strong quake hit northwestern Turkey.
The death toll in Turkey rose to 20,213 on Friday, the country’s health minister said. In Syria, more than 3,500 have been killed. More people remain under the rubble as quoted by Al Jazeera, Saturday (11/2/2023).
