The former teammate of the Napoli coach at the time of Spezia recounts the match against Diego in 1988: “We didn’t spare him the blows, but he was smiling. Luciano was someone who always wanted to improve, but he didn’t think about coaching…”
That day in August 1988 Luciano Spalletti – who wore the Spezia shirt – found himself against a certain Diego Armando Maradona: the Coppa Italia was being played and Napoli challenged the Ligurian team in Livorno (to the great regret of the supporters from La Spezia, deprived of that great occasion at home). Napoli won 3-1 against their current coach’s team with Maradona author of the free-kick that generated one of Carnevale’s two goals (the other blue goal was scored by Francini) and a couple of sensational plays.
