MOSCOW – Several countries in the world have reportedly voiced their intention to become members of the BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) since early 2022. Member countries of these intergovernmental organizations reportedly welcomed their aspirations.
“The number of countries applying to join the BRICS and SCO has jumped to 20,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told a meeting with the heads of the regional offices of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
“It is worth mentioning that over the past few years, including during the first year of Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine, the number of countries wishing to join the BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization has increased dramatically. As of now, there are about twenty of them,” Lavrov told.
He added that many of them applied for important roles in their region. Those countries include Turkey, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Mexico and Egypt.

The Russian foreign minister noted that the list of countries itself clearly shows the “failure of the West’s attempts to isolate” Russia, which is a member of both the BRICS and the SCO.
“The West’s attempts to impose its will on other peoples, to impose its so-called rules by which it wants to establish and maintain a pro-Western order are completely futile and completely hopeless,” Lavrov stressed.
According to him, “These countries’ intention to join the bloc also reflects the failure of the Western strategy, which has the opposite effect.”

Lavrov explained that an understanding of “geopolitical tectonic processes” prompted the countries to work together with “like-minded partners”.
