In August 2022, the Embracer Group acquired the rights to The Lord of the Rings. So it’s only a matter of time before we see new games based on the popular franchise. In its most recent financial report, the company detailed its plans to take full advantage of the IP and confirmed that at least 5 games are already in development.
According to the details, the projects are in their production stage and are the responsibility of various Embracer Group partners. Fans will have to be patient, as they will gradually arrive with the goal of having all of them available by April 2024.

What we know about the next Lord of the Rings games
Embracer Group said its purchase of the franchise rights has generated a lot of interest. For this reason, there are several internal and external studios that are interested in seizing the opportunity and working with the work of JRR Tolkien.
It is important to remember that the studio can not only use the IP in video games, but also has the freedom to make films, merchandise, board games and projects for other types of media.
“There are currently 5 games in production by external partners, which will be released in fiscal year 2023/24 (…) (The acquisition) has generated a lot of interest among internal and external partners for the intellectual property of The Lord of the Rings , in different media formats,” Embracer Group explained.
Unfortunately, no details of the games already in production were shared. The release of The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, which is part of this initiative, is still pending. On the other hand, Return to Moria, a Valheim-style Lord of the Rings game, was announced a long time ago.
Last year, EA announced The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth, a turn-based RPG in development for mobile devices. We will have to be patient and wait for all the details about the upcoming Embracer Group games.
