ROME, 09 FEB – “We take this opportunity to reiterate that EU law requires that national rules” on services “ensure equal treatment of operators, promote innovation and fair competition” and “protect against the risk of monopoly of public resources”. This was stated by a spokesman for the EU Commission after the green light from the Senate’s Budget and Constitutional Affairs commission for a one-year extension of the beach concessions. In Brussels it is recalled that an infringement procedure against Rome is already open due to the failure to comply with the Bolkestein directive and further postponements will not improve the situation.
