Tennis player Gijs Brouwer caused a stunt at the ABN AMRO Open by qualifying for the quarterfinals at the expense of the Dane Holger Rune. Brouwer was on his way to victory (6-4 4-0) when Rune retired due to an injury.
Brouwer therefore became the second Dutchman to reach the last eight, next to Tallon Grepes. The two Dutchmen meet each other on Friday evening with a place in the semi-finals at stake.
Rune is the number 9 in the world and, at 19 years old, is one of the top talents in tennis. Brouwer, 160th in the world ranking, was allowed to participate in the Rotterdam tournament with a wild card.
