The Belgian Football Association has appointed 37-year-old Domenico Tedesco as the new national coach for the national team. The born Italian, who also has German nationality, succeeds Roberto Martínez who has left. The appointment of Tedesco has been announced in the media for some time and the union has now confirmed this.
Tedesco was sacked from German club RB Leipzig in September after a disappointing start to the season. He previously also had Schalke 04 and Spartak Moscow under his wing.
The ‘Red Devils’ will start qualifying for next year’s European Championship in Germany on March 24 with a match against Sweden. Four days later they play a practice match against the Germans. Belgium got stuck in the group stage at the World Cup in Qatar at the end of last year, after which Martínez immediately left. The Spaniard has now become national coach of Portugal.
In 2018, the Belgians, led by Martínez, had finished third at the World Cup in Russia.
