Suara.com – Tarawih prayer is one of the recommended practices to be carried out during the month of Ramadan. But there is still confusion whether the tarawih prayers are 11 or 23 cycles?
The reason is, some Muslims in Indonesia do 23 cycles of tarawih prayers, but not a few also only 11 cycles. Which one is true? Consider the explanation of the following 11 or 23 cycles of Tarawih prayers.
Tarawih prayer is a worship whose law is sunnah muakkadah or highly recommended to be done because it has many virtues.
Tarawih prayers can be performed in congregation at the mosque/musholla or alone (munfarid) at home. This practice is highly recommended because every sin can be forgiven. This is as in a hadith narrated by Abu Hurairah, the Prophet SAW once said, “Whoever prays on the night of Ramadan (Tarawih prayer) with full faith and hope (reward from God), then his past sins will be forgiven.” (HR Muslim)

Meanwhile, there is a hadith narrated by Abu Dzar saying that the privilege of tarawih prayer is that its reward is equal to one full night of prayer, the Prophet SAW said, “Whoever prays with the imam until it is finished, then the reward of one full night of Qiyam is written for him” (HR Ahmad and Tirmidhi).
On the other hand, there are differences of opinion regarding the number of cycles of performing the tarawih prayer. Generally, tarawih prayers are carried out in 8 cycles (11 cycles with witr) and 20 cycles (23 cycles with witr).
The implementation of tarawih prayer of 8 rak’ahs refers to the hadith of Aisyah RA. Aisha was once asked about the number of rak’ahs of prayer that the Prophet SAW performed in the month of Ramadan.
Aishah replied, “The Prophet SAW never performed the Sunnah prayer in Ramadan and other months for more than eleven rak’ahs. He prayed 4 rakaat and don’t ask how good and beautiful it is. Then, he prayed another 4 rak’ahs, and don’t ask how beautiful and long it was. Then, he prayed 3 rak’ahs (witr),” (HR Bukhari and Muslim)
Aisyah also explained that carrying out 8 cycles of tarawih, namely 4 cycles, 4 cycles, and ending with 3 cycles of witir. Meanwhile, the 8 cycles of tarawih prayer can also be carried out with 2 cycles of 1 greeting each.

At the Taraweeh prayer as many as 20 rak’ahs were known at the time of Umar bin Khattab. During the tarawih prayer during the time of Caliph Umar bin Khattab, 20 rak’ats were performed. “From Yazid bin Ruman has said, ‘People always performed salat during the time of Umar RA in Ramadan as many as 23 rak’ahs (20 rak’ahs of tarawih, followed by 3 rak’ahs of witr),” (HR Malik)
In addition, there is another argument from Said bin Yazid who stated that the tarawih prayer during the time of Umar bin Khattab was 20 rak’ahs, namely, “The companions performed the prayer (tarawih) during the time of Umar RA in Ramadan for 20 rak’ah,” (HR Baihaqi).
So, that’s information about the number of cycles of tarawih prayers in the month of Ramadan. Thus, Muslims may perform the tarawih prayers 11 cycles or 23 cycles because both have the same basis and must be respected.
Such is the explanation of the 11 or 23 cycles of tarawih prayers which are equally permissible. Hopefully the information above is useful for you!
