In the midst of inflation in the United States, lower prices of some foodssuch as chicken wings and avocado, will give Americans a break to celebrate this Super Bowl with the most typical dishes.
According to a Wells Fargo bank report, wings are one of the most affordable options to watch the final of the professional football league (NFL), after its price dropped 22% compared to last year, while avocados are 20% cheaperdue to improvements in the production chain.
Some products have seen a drop in cost compared to 2022when prices rose due to problems in the supply chain, although inflation persists with a rate of 11.5% for food consumed at home and 8.5% for food outside the home.
During Super Bowl week last year, a pound of chicken wings sold for $3.38while it can now be had for $2.65, according to the USDA, as chicken supplies are at their highest since 2019.
Another of the headline ‘quarterbacks’ in food this year are avocadosafter some of its transportation problems from plantation places like Mexico and Peru to the United States were alleviated, the agriculture economist Michael Swanson of Wells Fargo told EFE.
“This year we are taking advantage of a better supply of avocados and less cost to transport them. We have also noticed that the shrimp supply has increased and prices are falling,” says Swanson, who proposes shrimp ceviche as the ideal appetizer to celebrate a ‘touchdown’, since it combines both ingredients.
As for the drinks, beer has seen an 8% increase in its pricewhile wine and spirits have risen by 3% and 2%, respectively.
“Wine has a lot of competition from all over the world. There are good wines in Europe, Latin America, Australia… People in the US can take advantage of the fact that global competition hasn’t raised prices like beer,” advises Swanson.
The economist believes that this is a first move towards lowering the prices of food products, since “supply is increasing” and “this is going to put pressure on producers to lower prices.”
Meanwhile, the report recommends NFL fans enjoy Sunday’s game over some chicken wings and sharing guacamole recipes.
The NFL Super Bowl LVII will face the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs this Sunday at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona (USA).
