KIEV – Air raid sirens sounded in Kiev during the unannounced visit of the President of the United States (US) Joe Biden on Monday (20/2/2023). However, there were no reports of a Russian attack.
According to an AFP report, sirens sounded as Biden and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, flanked by armed security, exited St Michael’s Cathedral where the leaders were meeting.
“The sirens did not cause panic,” the report said.
Biden’s trip to Ukraine is his first since Russia launched a military operation in the neighboring country nearly a year ago.
Biden vowed to announce more arms shipments to Kiev and additional sanctions against Moscow, according to the White House.

The visit comes as NATO members increase military aid to Kiev. The US, UK and Germany were among the countries that pledged last month to send modern main battle tanks to Ukraine.
The war in Ukraine continues as the West sends heavy weapons to Kiev. Russia warns that sending weapons will only prolong the conflict without changing the outcome.
