BELGRADE – Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic warned that the West’s recent announcement to supply Ukraine with main battle tanks marked a gross miscalculation.
Vucic’s remarks on Friday (3/2/2023) came after Russia threatened to burn any Western equipment that entered Ukraine. Moscow also vowed to retaliate “far beyond the range of the armored vehicles.”
Vucic noted the decision to supply Ukraine with tanks, especially with the “terrifying” German Leopard 2s, was the West’s “biggest” political mistake because it effectively succeeded in “uniting the Russian people like never before.”
Last month, Germany and the United States (US) agreed to provide a number of heavy tanks to Kiev. Washington has pledged between 30 and 50 M1 Abrams tanks, while Berlin is pledging 14 Leopard 2A6s from Bunderswehr’s own stockpile.
“An additional 51 tanks of the same model and 88 tanks of the older Leopard 1 model may also come from Rheinmetall when they are refurbished,” said a German statement.

Berlin has also given the go-ahead to countries that have expressed a desire to export their own Leopard tanks to Ukraine.
That includes Poland, Finland, Spain, Norway and the Netherlands. Britain and Canada also said they would send their heavy equipment to Kiev.
The decision has been widely criticized by Russia, which called it an “extremely dangerous” move that threatens to escalate the conflict in Ukraine.
