The discussion around Yuridia and the comments that Pati Chapoy made in “Ventaneando” about her physical appearance, in 2005, has become a topic of national interest.

The Ministry of the Interior (Segob), through the National Commission to Prevent Violence against Women (Conavim), published a statement this February 11, in which he condemned the statements that the Mexican journalist made during one of the “Ventaneando” broadcasts, in which, despite acknowledging Yuridia’s great vocal capacitymade reference to her weight, denominator as a “fat” person, a situation that, according to what the interpreter recounts, affected her a lot emotionally.
“We condemn the statements made at the time by a well-known host of shows against the singer Yuridia, when criticizing her physical appearance,” the statement begins. Conavim also He spoke of the weight and impact that the media have on society, which is why the act of promoting discrimination should be avoided. In fact, the commission clarified that, although the comments addressed to the interpreter happened more than a decade ago, today, they could promote the discriminatory culture that still permeates our population.
“The mass media are key actors for the construction of a culture free of violence against women; its contents, expressions and behaviors of society in spaces of mass diffusion have an impact on the conducts and behaviors of society“, he continues.
The Segob together with Conavim exposed that the acts of fatophobia affect the mental health, social development and job opportunities of the people who are discriminated against because of their weight and not only this, since they can also cause the appearance of eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia and overweight. In this way, they reiterated that said comments are part of discriminatory acts that are classified as digital and media violence:
“In doing so, especially in a space of massive diffusion, he incurred in discriminatory acts that can be typified within digital and media violence, stipulated in the provisions of the General Law on Women’s Access to a Life Free of Violence (Title II, Chapter IV TER, article 20 Quinquies), detonating in the past and now, in fraudulent actions that cause ridicule for the physical appearance of a person”.
In this way, they exhorted the media in general to combat all kinds of violence against women. So far, the Mexican journalist has not made any public statement regarding the statement.
