Superbike returns to Imola and in 2023 two grands prix are scheduled in Italy: Misano in early June and Imola in mid-July. The news was made official Today.
Dorna and Formula Imola have signed an agreement which provides for the return of the Superbike Championship to the Enzo and Dino Ferrari International Circuit in the 2023 season.
In Imola this year we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Autodrome. A great two-wheeled show that will surely make the many enthusiasts happy, with the protagonists of the top championship reserved for series-derived bikes returning to battle it out after four years on the weekend 14-16 July.
Imola has undoubtedly been one of the historic Superbike appointments over the years, offering memorable challenges such as the duel in front of 100,000 spectators between Colin Edwards and Troy Bayliss in 2002 and Max Biaggi’s conquest of the world title with Aprilia in 2010, before all tricolor brace in the category. There will also be space over the weekend for two classes that have always reserved great balance and competitiveness, such as the Supersport World Championship and the Supersport 300 World Championship, ideal gyms for preparing for the leap into the main category.
Gregorio Lavilla (WorldSBK Executive Director): “After three seasons of absence, we are thrilled to welcome Imola to the 2023 calendar. This second round in Italy confirms the popularity of the Championship among the fans as there is a lot of passion thanks to the presence of so many Italian riders and teams in the Paddock. Imola has an illustrious history within World Superbike, and we can’t wait for the round at Imola, which promises to be an exciting event for the fans.”
Marco Panieri (Mayor of Imola): “Our Enzo and Dino Ferrari racetrack is back in the Superbike World Championship! An awaited, well-known and historic motoring event on our track, which in 2019, despite the bad weather, was able to reach over 70,000 visitors over the three days of the event. Imola confirms itself as the beating heart of the Motor Valley, capable of combining the emotions of engines with those of music. Another piece is completed and the 2023 Autodrome calendar demonstrates that this year too will be rich, dynamic and engaging, continuing to consolidate the circuit with numerous events in the Historic Centre! After Formula 1, cars, concerts, even motorcycles are back, representing a characteristic trait and identity of our area”.
Pietro Benvenuti (Autodrome Director): “It is with great satisfaction that we announce this agreement with Dorna WSBK Organization, which brings Imola back to the prestigious Superbike calendar. We know that there are many fans who will not miss this appointment because Imola has always been strongly linked to this championship. Without forgetting that we will have a world champion on the track astride the Ducati and this will undoubtedly be a great incentive to be present for the many fans of the Ducati. The choice of the month of July is then also strategic for the area because it will bring induced activities in a period where the accommodation facilities are not full, confirming the role of driving force for the Autodrome’s economy. A great result made possible also thanks to the full support of the municipal administration, which strongly wanted the return of the Superbike to Imola”.
