Valentine’s Day arrives, Valentine’s Day —because the rest of the year is not apt to show affection—, and on Netflix they want to celebrate love hand in hand with Carlos Monteroco-creator of Elite and his new series, All the times we fell in love.
In addition to Elite, Spain has produced some of Netflix’s most popular series —in a non-English language—, such as Money Heist.

An intermittent “love” story like the Guadiana
The new one serie of Netflix revolves around Irene, played by Georgina Amorósand Julio, who gives life Franco Masini. Irene is a film student who moves to Madrid to do the degree with which she hopes to become a director; Julio studies law, but the world of spotlights, and Irene, will soon knock on his doors.
A good part of All the Times We Fall in Love takes place in the 2000s. By chance, this review was assigned to someone who studied audiovisual production in those years —a little bit later—, so I felt some connection with the ambientation.
Los eight episodes, between 40 and 54 minuteswill follow this couple whose initial attraction is instantaneous, only to realize account that they can’t be together, but they can’t live without each other.
Another part of the series, much smaller, jumps to our days to serve as a bridge in retrospect of this love story? that they are going to tell us in All the Times We Fall in Love.
The sordid and unfair audiovisual industry
The main common thread of the series of Netflix is the connection with the world of cinema of the two parts of this couple.
It is a world that will not cease to come between the two protagonists and their friends. One thing the series does quite well is portray how frivolous, fake and demanding this industry is, whose dark nature is often hidden behind the bright spotlight.
However, the series is responsible for torpedoing its own virtues with a string of sequences that, if we had recorded with a cell phone, would look like camera tests for a homemade short.
Be careful, it is not a problem of photography, but of narrating a series of ordinary and boring scenes that bombard us by saturation until we do not care what is happening.
Every time we fall in love, he also resorts to appealing to the viewer’s emotions through a historical event that we cannot talk about. Sometimes, once in a while, he makes an emotional connection. But, again, the series is in charge of devaluing that asset with poor, as well as unnecessary, allusions.
A story without magic
Building a love story requires very necessary ingredients so that, when put together, they manage to dazzle the viewer. In All the Times We Fall in Love, they are conspicuous by their absence.
Despite being connected to the world of cinema, the story lacks that magic that makes a love story endearing. Although the pillar of the story can keep a certain appeal, the narration is, as we have indicated before, typical of a short film to walk around the house.
Although it is commendable to try to achieve a high level of realism, the characters, not only the two protagonists, they are so real, they are not entertaining. All the times we fell in love is the typical story that many groups of friends have, with two of its members unable to stop being the center of attention with their couple nonsense.
All that relationship is wrapped in clichés that fail to mask that between Georgina Amorós and Franco Masini there is no chemistry. They try, we won’t be the ones to deny it, but the screen doesn’t reflect it. In fact, more than once, his characters come to cause rejection.
The series does two things well: show how capricious and stupid is “love”and nurture each episode with its regulation ration of risqué scenesto no one’s surprise, coming from the co-creator of Elite.
Of course, All the Times We Fall in Love will work phenomenally on Netflix because it meets those parameters that the average viewer likes: eroticism, morbidity, a story that requires no reflection and the obligatory tacky jokes.
For us, however, not even nostalgia saves the Netflix series. A few years ago, the platform brought Generation 56 K from Italy, a series that, without being a panacea, has much more heart than this, having similar mechanics. But if what you are looking for for Valentine’s Day is the “arrejunte”, I suppose it is perfectly worth it.
