LONDON – The aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth It turns out that the British Royal Navy once tracked and chased a Chinese spy submarine in a tense incident in the waters of the South China Sea.
It happened in the summer of 2021, but was only revealed in a BBC documentary that will be shown on Sunday (12/2/2023).
Two-minute footage from the documentary shows how Navy officers aboard the aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth discovered a Chinese spy submarine using state-of-the-art sonobuoys.
Sonobuoys are small sonar devices dropped into the water to pick up the sound of engines and propellers from alien submarines.

The officer is seen quickly deploying a helicopter that drops another sonobuoys into the water to accurately track the sub.
The Chinese submarine was eventually tracked away from the British carrier.
“So what we thought was a submarine, now it’s definitely a submarine. It’s not a whale,” the officer said in the BBC documentary.
“If this were in a different scenario, the conflict situation would prove that we have detected something, in sufficient time, protecting the carrier’s main body,” he said.
According to the documentary, the Russian-made Chinese spy submarine was caught hiding under the waves, trying to shadow the aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth.
