WASHINGTON – A pair twins usually born not far away, usually in just a matter of minutes. But what is experienced by a woman United States of America (US) This is a rare occurrence.
A woman from San Francisco, USA, gave birth to twins she conceived a week after she became pregnant with her second child while pregnant.
Odalis Martinez De La O, 26, became pregnant with her first child on the last day of her menstrual cycle before becoming pregnant again five days later.
The mother of two was told by an ultrasound doctor that Lilo and Imelda’s babies, now one year old, were ‘different sizes’ and had been conceived at different times.
This rare phenomenon is called superfetation and is “very rare”.
It happened after she released two eggs instead of one during her cycle – and both were fertilized by different sperm.
The fertilized egg then needs to be implanted into the pregnant uterus; if all three occur then superfetation occurs.
She said even medical professionals were confused when she took her twins to their first doctor.
“I was really surprised,” said the woman who works as a program manager.
“First, because they are twins, and second, processing the fact that they were conceived five days apart,” she said.
