Guadalajara is a hotbed of musicians who are looking for their place in the world with sincere and personal proposals. This is the case of Pez Kokomo, a young musician who is developing his sound style from two parallel universes in which he converges: the beach and the city.
Right now three singles are available on digital platforms: “Hamaca”, “Caleidoscopio” and “Bengala”, the first two represent precisely this duality in which it operates. By the way, we talked to him. “The concept is to mix the urban with the tropical, I live here in Guadalajara, but at the same time I live in Puerto Vallarta, where surfing is. And from there I have absorbed all the elements to create this concept“, Explain.
“‘Hamaca’ is the tropical side and ‘Kaleidoscope’ is more the city, the concrete. But within the two poles, when I’m on the beach, I write brighter things, a more different vibe, and on the other side, I write the that makes me feel like the city, a little bit absorbed by the concrete jungle, so to speak”.
Meanwhile, the single “Bengala” belongs more to a sound exploration and about heartbreak. Now he is about to release his fourth single, which will be called “Fusión”, “That song is about love, I’ve been re-experiencing writing about this feeling”. The song is released on February 25; the producer is Juan Gerardo Castillo. “He is from a band called Marte and with him I am exploring the style that the group has, which is more of a fusion of something more spacey and tropical.”
On how this recent musical project came to be, he highlights: “All my life I have been a musician, from a very young age I was surrounded by music, I never stopped doing it, I had my toys and it was a hobby. But about three years ago, right in the pandemic, I began to see that I had many friends who had their own project and that gave me a lot of impetus, I began to make songs and I produced them with Alex Romeu.he is the producer of the first three songs I released and as a result of this I went on an adventure, I began to meet more people, those from the Guadalajara scene and this has kept me on this path of continuing to make music ”.
Pez Kokomo’s real name is Erick De Aguinaga and he confesses that he chose this name for his project because “Pez” has to do with the beach, the place where he likes to be and “Kokomo” comes from The Beach Boys’ song, “a mythical beach that they describe. So, I liked the mixture of the two words”. Regarding his creative process, He highlights that he has his studio where he makes his demos and his compositions, “what I try to do is collect sounds that take me back to the beach and the city”.
Once he makes the composition is when he shows it to his producer and they begin to develop the piece. The visual part is also very important for Kokomo Fish, he is also a professional in this area. “It’s one of the funniest parts because it’s all been between best friends. I try to land most of the idea and take care of all the production and logisticsand from there Omar Bravo, one of my best friends, joins him, they call him ‘Rapunkzel’ and he helps me direct when I’m in front of the camera, we also brainstorm a lot of ideas and land the scripts”.
Arturo Martínez Villa also joins the team as director of photography, “he is a cameraman from Cancun who has joined us to record with us.” He reiterates that they are three friends who, more than working, have fun developing the clips. In the “Kaleidoscope” video, Joo Skellington, who is a professional makeup artist, who has stood out at Comic-Con and Mario Olvera, also joined. who developed the visual effects. Finally, the musician reiterates that this sound project is his priority for him.
“I have realized that I have a lot of music inside, I have already reached a point where I cannot ignore it. I’m just preparing an album, the concept will be to find the mix between ‘Hammock’ and ‘Kaleidoscope’, find all the colors between those two shades. I hope to present the album in October”. Three of the singles that have already come out will be included on this plate and it has not yet decided if “Bengala” will be a part too. On March 18, the concert will open for Kike Jiménez at Estudio Diana.
