I tablet Android are making a comeback and one of the largest Android manufacturers (we are talking about the parent company of OnePlus, BBK) is bringing an Android tablet to the US for the first time. Say hello to the OnePlus Pad, a tablet from 11.61 inches with optional keyboard and stylus. We don’t know how much it costs, there isn’t even a precise release date, but pre-orders will start in April.
What we do know are the specs. The 11.61-inch display is a 144Hz LCD, with a resolution of 2800×2000. It’s an aspect ratio of 7:5, which is a bit wider than a 4:3 display, which OnePlus claims is a “book-like” aspect ratio. The SoC is a MediaTek Dimensity 9000. It’s a rarity in the US, but it’s basically a generic ARM design for 2022 flagship phones, with one 3.05GHz ARM Cortex X2 CPU, three A710 CPUs, and four A510 CPUs. It is a 4nm chip with an ARM Mali-G710 MC10. The device also features 8GB of RAM (you can choose from 12GB), 128GB of UFS 3.1 storage, and a 9510mAh battery. This isn’t a super-flagship tablet and should (hopefully) be affordable.
As always, the trademark of OnePlus it’s fast chargingwhich is 67W. On a small phone battery, this type of charging usually gets the phone from 0 to 100 in about half an hour, but on a large tablet battery, a full charge takes “just over 60 minutes“. In the explanatory note, OnePlus warns against any attempt to repair it, stating: “The battery has been specially encrypted for security reasons. Please go to an official OnePlus service center to repair the battery or to get an original replacement battery. I’ve never heard of an “encrypted” battery before, but I think they mean there’s a serial number checker in the firmware somewhere and it will presumably refuse to function if you replace it. As for whether there actually is a “official service center OnePlus”, there is a business on the OnePlus India website, but not one in the US, so it seems that the support service is only available by mail.
