Now thanks to Panini Comics, we can enjoy in a deluxe edition of the first volume of the adventures of Meggan PuceanuKitty Pryde, Rachel Summers, Nightcrawler and the captain britainwhich comes to us under the title of Marvel Gold. Excalibur 1.
From the ashes of X-Men…
After that mutant arch that became known as The Mutant Massacrelos X-Men they were worse than decimated (supposedly). after that, Kitty Prydeyour pet y night owlveterans of the mutant group, left with the unlikely daughter of Scott Summers y Jean Grey arrival of the future Rachel Summersto the isla muiran emblematic place in Scotland where a new stage in their lives would begin…
And in this new stage that will lead them to be the first mutant superhero group in Europe, they will meet the other two founding members of this group: Captain Britain, the one whom Alan Moore had put him in a privileged place years ago (alongside Alan Davis), and his shapeshifting girlfriend Meggan.
The characters at the center of everything
These five characters are going to be the pillar on which the series is based, at least in the material included in this first volume. Claremont is very faithful to himself and his style, and just as he has been doing for years in the rest of the mutant collections, here he is going to define his protagonists very well from the beginning, giving them marked personalities with which he will make the reader feel , after reading a few numbers, that he knows these characters and that he is able to predict how they will react to a certain situation.
Kitty Pryde is one of those characters that Claremont always treated with great care and that showed his preference for him. no one like Gatasombra to serve as a vehicle for adolescent angst and to embody the traumas of change and living in a world that doesn’t understand you. Kurt Wagner is another character who shone especially during the years of the Claremont stage, and here she would largely lead the group’s singing voice, leaving Rachel a much more typical role of the canonical heroine with tremendous powers.
For her part, the multidisciplinary Meggan and her boyfriend and future husband Brian Braddock They bring the British touch to adventures full of interdimensional travel and more fantasy than is usual in mutant series. Adventures where, to the joy of some and the misfortune of others, humor has a fundamental component. And this is perhaps the most controversial aspect of these issues since, especially today, this comical approximation to the superhero comic that sometimes borders on the parodic may be a bit outdated and become uphill for some readers…
The baptism of Alan Davis
When he arrives at this series, Alan Davis had already worked on Marvel Comics precisely together with Chris Claremont in mutant series, after having spent a couple of years drawing Batman for DC Comics. And it is here when he wins the favor of Marvelite readers (despite having already done years before with Moore not only the aforementioned Captain Britain but also that masterpiece that is Miracleman) with a style that shines in the characterization of the characters and the stylization of their figures. Notable is his absence when in these numbers he gave way to other cartoonists such as Ron Lim…
In his future he would still have to work on projects as important as The nailbut as far as the readers of The House of Ideas A star was born here that would stay in their hearts for the rest of their lives…
In short, with this first volume of this new series we are introduced to a fundamental group within the mythology of the Marvel Comics mutants in a collection as atypical as it is mythical where we can enjoy the work of two authors of capital importance in this section of Marvel Universe.
