MADRID, 26 FEB – Iran has released a Spanish citizen detained since last November, reports the Madrid Foreign Ministry. This is Ana Baneira, 24 years old, freed yesterday evening. But the official announcement, said the minister Josè Manuel Albares, was postponed to today, when her plane took off from Iran. In November, Spanish diplomatic sources gave the news of the arrest of an Iberian citizen, without providing other details. The circumstances of the arrest have never been specified, but the period of detention coincides with the peak of protests in Iran, following the death in September of Mahsa Amini while in detention after being arrested for not wearing the Islamic veil correctly . Another Spanish citizen is detained in Iran, Santiago Sanchez Cogedor, arrested in October as soon as he entered Iran while – as a football fan – he wanted to walk to Qatar where the World Cup was being held.
