A new rumor suggests that Lucasfilm plans to announce a series of star-studded short films at April’s Star Wars Celebration.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was the first time Lucasfilm used deppfake technology to make characters look like they did in the original trilogy.
The late Peter Cushing was resurrected as Grand Moff Tarkin. While Carrie Fisher’s Princess Leia was also restored to her appearance from A New Hope. Lucasfilm later tried to change the cast when Alden Ehrenreich was cast to replace Harrison Ford in Solo: A Star Wars Story. The film did not have the expected reception, and its failure at the box office made Lucasfilm rethink producing more films of the franchise for theaters.
Han Solo, Luke and Leia protagonists of new shorts
Now, a rumor claims that, in April’s Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm will announce a new series of Disney+ shorts featuring Han, Luke, and Leia. as protagonists!.
This raises many interesting questions. Like if Ford and Hamill will ever reprise their respective roles (the latter seems more likely than the former) and how Leia’s return after Fisher’s death would be handled. The technology is there to bring Leia back, but whether she should be used is another matter entirely.
Still, this announcement could give Ehrenreich a new chance as Han, although these shorts could also arrive in animated form.
The source of this rumor is Shaun O’Rourke, a “multi-talented professional with more than 20 years of experience in the film industry.” He has worked with big-name companies like HBO, CBS, Warner Bros., Disney, Lionsgate, Blumhouse, Amazon Studios, Hulu, and Netflix, so we can’t completely dismiss these claims.
If so, these short films could explore stories from the time elapsed from Return of the Jedi to The Force Awakens. Or even fill in the blanks between movies in the original trilogy. Be that as it may, it will be interesting to discover what they offer us.
