Club Brugge is far from a place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League. The Belgian champion lost on Wednesday in the eighth finals to Benfica, which is led by former PSV coach Roger Schmidt: 0-2. The return in Lisbon is on March 7.
At Bruges, the Dutchmen Bjorn Meijer and Noa Lang both had a base place. Meijer was at the basis of the first chance for Bruges with a pass to Canadian Tajon Buchanan in the 5th minute, but keeper Odisseas Vlachodimos saved.
Benfica had a field predominance and also had the best opportunities. Defender António Silva headed over from close range in the 26th minute. Striker Gonçalo Ramos also missed a good chance in the first half, also with his head.
Immediately after the break, Ramos was close to scoring again. This time he tapped the ball just wide. Benfica took the lead in the 51st minute. The Scot Jack Hendry fouled Ramos, after which João Mário used the awarded penalty kick via the underside of the crossbar: 0-1.
Club Brugge tried to force the equalizer in the remainder, but the team of the English coach Scott Parker managed to become little dangerous. The Brazilian former Ajax player David Neres, who had come on, on the other hand (after a mistake by Meijer) was successful in the 88th minute (0-2). Neres then scored again, but that goal was rejected due to offside.
Benfica eliminated Ajax in the eighth finals last season and then lost to Liverpool in the quarter finals.
