ROME, FEBRUARY 19 – Russia has recorded nearly 143,000 casualties since the start of the war in Ukraine, according to the Ukrainian army. The latest update from the Kiev Defense Ministry reported on Twitter says that the number of victims of the Russian side has reached 142,860, up by 590 compared to yesterday. A reported 3,310 tanks and 6,545 armored fighting vehicles were destroyed, an increase of seven and 12 respectively from the previous day. Tweeting the figures, the Ukrainian ministry – explains the Guardian – included a quote from the 1968 Beatles song ‘Back in the Ussr’: “Let me hear your balalaika (a Russian instrument) resonating”.
