After Brignone’s success in the combined another blue ahead of all, like Isolde Kostner in 1997. Silver Shiffrin, bronze tied for Huetter and Lie. Eighth Brignone, eleventh Goggia
The World Ski Championships are always more blue. After Federica Brignone’s gold in combined there is another Italian in front of all: Marta Bassino is gold in super-G at the end of an extraordinary race, with an irresistible finish that allowed her to leave even Mikalea Shiffrin behind (of 11/100). In third place (at 33/100) the Austrian Cornelia Huetter and the Norwegian Kajsa Vicfhoff Lie finish on an equal footing.
“I’m very happy – Marta said moved to the Rai microphones -. It was anxious to see the others descending after me, because I lost an hour at the top… But below I think I skied well”. Already in the super-G of the combined Bassino had shown that she was at ease on the bumps of the Roc de Fer in Meribel: she had gone out in three quarters of the race due to an error, but before that she had been among the fastest. Bassino shook until the end, Alice Robinson started with 30 and was ahead until the last intermediate before a mistake in the last corner that relegated her to seventh place.
Until d’oro
—
For Marta, who had never won in super-G in the World Cup, it is the second world championship medal after the gold in parallel two years ago in Cortina. Bassino, from Piedmont from Borgo San Dalmazzo, will turn 27 on February 27 and this is the consecration of a talent that has been revealed since the Junior World Championships (she won gold in giant 9 years ago). “I had everything right in my head – said Bassino -, I’m really happy. The gold in parallel two years ago was nice, but today it’s something more, something strong. It’s incredible. I’m really happy with myself and at the same time amazed that I did the race so well.”
It is the ninth gold of the Azzurri women’s skiing at the World Championships, the third in super-G after the triumphs of Isolde Kostner in the 1996 and 1997 editions. Only in Sestriere 1997 (two golds by Deborah Compagnoni in giant and slalom, gold by Kostner in super-G ) women’s Italy has won the most gold medals at the World Cup.
The race
—
The Italian coach of the Swiss, Roland Platzer, set up a difficult super-G. A few traps, the final bends to test the technique. And here Marta Bassino was super, in the final stretch she slipped over two tenths ahead of Shiffrin, who had been faster in the upper sliding section. Nothing to do for Federica Brignone, who made a mistake before the attack on the final block: she still finished eighth just 22 cents from the medal. “I wasn’t able to make speed down here” said Fede, who will not participate in the descent test and will concentrate on the giant. And Sofia Goggia is eleventh, 76/100 from her golden teammate, of which 50 lost in the last corners. “I had a pretty solid race – declared Goggia -. I made many imperfections, I struggled to find the feeling. Some curves I took hard, it gives me hope for the descent. Congratulations to Marta, I’m happy: she means that the team is working in the right direction ”. Fifteenth at 1”01 Elena Curtoni: “I don’t know what didn’t work, luckily I have another chance in the downhill”.
