TEL AVIV – The deputy head of the West Bank Settlement Council, Davidi Ben Zion, on Sunday evening (26/2/2023) called on extremist Jewish settlers to “wipe out” the village of Huwara.
When settlers raided a neighborhood of the West Bank city of Nablus, Ben Zion tweeted, “Enough talk about building and strengthening settlements, deterrence must be in place and there is no room for mercy.”
Although he deleted the tweet, which was reported by most Israeli and Palestinian media, screenshots show Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich having “liked” it.
The Times of Israel reported that while Smotrich “liked” the tweet before it was deleted, he also urged settlers not to take the law into their own hands.

A prominent figure in the settlement movement spoke to Israel’s Kan public broadcaster early Monday, saying it was “shameful” that the Israeli army was removing settlers from Huwara.
“Why should we stop? We protect the lives of the Jews… It’s a shame the army even got here,” Daniella Weiss told Kan.

He added that the settlers “had so many weapons” that there was no need for a military presence.
“Anyone who thinks that we should use the army to confront these attackers (Palestinians living in Huwara)… is mistaken,” he said.
