Like all technology, there are always detractors. If at that time there were already electricity, it is impossible for the WiFi connection I didn’t have them. For example, in the social imagination it is thought that wireless networks are harmful to people’s health. But is that really true?
In addition to WiFi networks, it is true that low-frequency electromagnetic fields, which include electrical appliances, radio waves, microwaves, visible light and power lines, also raise many questions about whether or not they affect the health of people. Well, the most recent scientific evidence that we have on the possible detrimental health effects it’s a studio. Specifically, this one that was published in ‘Critical Reviews in Environmental Science’.
non-ionizing radiation
First of all, it must be taken into account that radiation that is dangerous to people’s health is known as ionizing radiation. This manages to penetrate a matter and is capable of removing electrons from surrounding atoms. Among these alterations, it can cause chemical changes in DNA or cause abnormal development in people’s cells.
However, there is nothing to worry about. More than anything, because a Wi-Fi network and the entire radio spectrum that surrounds us is far from those radiations. In the study ‘Health effects of WiFi radiation: a review based on systematic quality evaluation’, the last one that refers to this aspect that generates so many doubts, they make it very clear: «We found little evidence that the Wi-Fi exposure is a health risk in an everyday environment, where exposure levels are considerably lower than the reference values of the ICNIRP (International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection)”.
To do this, they had to choose articles with correct methodologies, in order to reach that conclusion. And, above all, being able to affirm that the WiFi network does not have any negative effect on people’s health. Of the 1,385 previously selected articles, only 23 met the criteria. However, in this study it is also reflected that hundreds of cases of adolescents, children, pregnant women or other people who were hypersensitive to electromagnetic radiation.
SEPR Warning
However, despite the fact that this latest macro-study makes it clear that the WiFi connection does not have dangerous radiationthe truth is that the SEPR, Spanish Society of Radiological Protection, has recommended not to stay for a long time near the router.
In addition to this, it must be taken into account that IRPA entities, such as the 17 Ibero-American scientific societies for radiological protection included in CIPRACEM, or state agencies such as the Russian National Committee for Protection Against Non-Ionizing Radiation, recommend using the wired connection before using the router’s wireless network. Especially, within schools, universities, that is, within the educational field.
And not only this, but prudent use of mobile devices is also recommended, since electromagnetic radiation from smartphones may have unwanted effects in some people. However, that is another topic that we will deal with at another time.
