Ilario Castagner, 82 years old, former coach of Inter, Milan, Lazio and above all of the “Perugia dei miracoli”, who led from 1974 to 1980 and then in two other phases (1993-1995 and 1998-1999) has passed away. In the 1978-79 season he was the first Serie A manager to end a season unbeaten, but without winning the championship. Perugia finished second behind Milan. Castagner finished the tournament with 19 wins and 11 draws. From 1980 to 1982 he led Lazio in Serie B, only to win the cadet championship with Milan, who also trained in Serie A.
Castagner was also the coach of Inter, Pescara and Pisa, before ending his career with Perugia in 1999. As a coach he won two Serie B championships, a Serie C championship, the old Coppa Piano Karl Rappan with Perugia and the Mitropa Cup with Ascoli (1986/87 season). Before becoming a coach he was also a footballer, striker for Perugia, Rimini, Prato, Legnano and Reggiana.
