With its launch just around the corner, Hogwarts Legacy is still making a lot of noise for all the wrong reasons. It is no secret to anyone that part of the conversation revolves around the controversy of the British writer JK Rowling. To express her discontent, many people, including Harry Potter fans, plan to boycott the game. Unfortunately, this movement turned into a wave of harassment.
For months, groups of people on social networks recommended that the community not acquire the open world video game. In the midst of the decision, a subreddit stated that it will ban anyone who supports the author of the original books. Also, a popular forum barred members from discussing the project.
In case you don’t know, JK Rowling earned the enmity of many for her comments against the LGBTQIA+ community and transgender people.
Now, the discussion has moved to Twitch. Various streamers lashed out at the streaming platform for promoting Hogwarts Legacy. Unfortunately, users also harass and annoy content creators who play the game.

Matt and Shelby from the Girlfriend Reviews channel are harassed on Twitch for playing Hogwarts Legacy
Matt and Shelby, a couple who owns the YouTube and Twitch channel known as Girlfriend Reviews, were some of the people who got early access to the video game from Warner Bros. Games and Avalanche Studios. On Monday, February 6, they set out to share their adventure with their followers via live stream.
Unfortunately, the stream did not go as expected. What happens is that JK Rowling’s detractors attacked the couple in chat for the simple fact of playing Hogwarts Legacy and spreading it on Twitch.
“I almost think about disconnecting. I’m barely into the second match, and every time I look at the chat the conversation annoys me,” Matt commented. “Maybe we can come back later, take a little break or something,” Shelby added. “You can take a break if you want. I’ll just stop talking and go finish the match,” Matt replied.

Hey guys! I see a lot of you are not feeling this choice! If you go to our stream you’ll see we are raising money for the Trevor Project while we play this game we spent no money on. We’ll play it (again, for free) so you can know how it is without having to!

In that conversation, Shelby is heard to be on the verge of tears and noticeably upset by the situation; soon after, she leaves the room. When that happens, Matt lashes out at the viewers of the live broadcast.
In case you missed it: Despite JK Rowling’s stance, Hogwarts Legacy has LGBTQIA+ characters
Of course, this situation provoked all kinds of opinions on social networks. Although some Internet users defend the attitudes of the viewers, the vast majority were in favor of the couple. Despite the controversy, Matt and Shelby resumed the live broadcasts of Hogwarts Legacy.
“There are more effective ways to support trans rights than bullying and harassing content creators who want to play a title that means a lot to them. I grew up with Harry Potter and Hogwarts, I’m also interested in the game, but it doesn’t mean to support JK Rowling’s views,” argued one netizen. “I support trans people and their fight for equality. But the violence and negativity thrown at people who want to relive their childhood through a video game is too much and counterproductive to the overall cause they are fighting for.” commented another.
