JAKARTA – Conference of The New Emerging Forces (CONEFO) was President Soekarno’s idea to form a new force consisting of developing countries to counterbalance the 2 big powers namely the Soviet Union and the United States bloc.
In addition, the purpose of establishing CONEFO at that time was to rival the power of the United Nations. This was because according to Soekarno the establishment of the United Nations was not in the center, but instead was controlled by superpower countries such as the United States.
Quoting from the History State website, the severing of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and the United States was the forerunner to the heating up of relations between Soekarno and the US. Thus strengthening Soekarno to form a counter organization to the United Nations.

The formation of CONEFO on January 7, 1965, was a project based on a high philosophy about the nature of a non-aligned state that had been proclaimed by Soekarno from the start.
Indonesia does not want to serve Western countries and does not want to worship Eastern countries.
Indonesia is a large country with a large population. President Soekarno was also determined to unite the strength of the newly independent countries to unite and not follow the Western or Eastern blocs.
In his speech at the UN headquarters on September 30, 1960, Soekarno requested that the UN headquarters be moved to a place that was not involved in the Cold War atmosphere. But his opinion at the time was like carving on water, meaning nothing.
In 1964, Sukarno began inviting friends from the People’s Republic of China (PRC), Vietnam, North Korea and the RPA (United Arab Republic) to join him.
With strong explanations and reasons, the PRC agreed and the RPA had no doubts. At the end of that year, the two alliance countries sent assistance from several ships containing building materials for the CONEFO building in Jakarta.
