At Gigi’s insistence, Vogue decided to do ‘something with Efteling’ during her shoot. “My family comes from Kaatsheuvel,” said the daughter of the Dutch Yolanda Hadid. “The Efteling was a regular spot when we were in the Netherlands. It takes me back to my childhood and teenage years. When I’m there I immediately get that feeling of happiness that I also had as a child.”
When her face is covered with stickers from Pardoes, Dragon Touchy and Holle Bolle Gijs, Gigi can’t believe her luck. “Now just poffertjes and you’ve made my day.”
Gigi says that the traditional Dutch amusement park still inspires her even at work: “I think my love for set design originated at Efteling. As a child I found the Droomvlucht so enchanting: the flowers, the elves, I wanted to live there. I thought there: someone created this, thought it up and brought it to life. Of course that’s what you do when you’re setting up a shoot or standing in front of the camera, you’re trying to translate a vision and a world.”
The new Vogue will be in stores from Thursday 16 February.
