PARIS – The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs claims that Russia threatens the sovereignty of several African countries and endangers their populations.
The accusations came after Moscow commented on recent decisions by Mali and Burkina Faso to expel French troops from their territories.
At a news conference on Thursday (2/2/2023), Quai d’Orsay spokeswoman Anne-Claire Legendre accused Russia of “engaging in neocolonial politics” in Africa and said Moscow’s “mercenaries” operating on the continent endangered the “security of the African population.” “
The day before, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Paris continued to treat African countries “from the point of view of its colonial past.”
“French colonialism on the African continent has come to an end. The era when African countries had to ask someone, especially France, before making sovereign decisions is over,” Zakharova told Anadolu Agency at a press conference in Moscow.

“We are not interested in what they say in Paris. We are interested in what each country and the African Union have to say,” Zakharova said carefree.
Last month, Paris reluctantly agreed to Burkina Faso’s demands that all French troops leave the country within 30 days.
At a protest in Ouagadougou, demonstrators denounced France’s former colonial rule and waved the Russian flag.
