FC Utrecht has eliminated AZ in the eighth finals of the KNVB Cup. In Alkmaar, the formation of the Danish trainer Michael Silberbauer won 2-1 after extra time against the title candidate in the Eredivisie.
After almost an hour, FC Utrecht took the lead through a goal from captain Nick Viergever, who saw a possibly intended as a cross disappear into the goal. Jesper Karlsson equalized in the 87th minute. It was striking that the Swede had missed a penalty barely a minute earlier.
In extra time, Naoki Maeda gave FC Utrecht the lead again. The game was briefly halted shortly before the end because the Utrecht goalkeeper Vasilis Barkas was pelted with objects from the stands.
AZ and FC Utrecht also played against each other in the competition a week and a half ago. Then the game ended in 5-5.
A minute of silence was held before the game to remember the victims of the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria.
