The FC Groningen Supporters Association has reacted positively to the dismissal of technical director Mark-Jan Fledderus at the gatekeeper of the Eredivisie. “It had become an unsustainable situation,” says chairman John de Jonge.
“Hopefully it’s not too late,” said De Jonge. “Of course it is a personal drama for Fledderus, but he is responsible for the situation we are in now. Normally the trainers have to leave, but that has already happened. Now we have to get the positive sentiments back.”
When asked who should succeed Fledderus, De Jonge immediately has two names ready. “Roy Beukenkamp or Henk Veldmate, they have done well at Groningen in the past. I don’t know at all if that is realistic, but someone has to come soon. We need to have two scenarios ready: one for enforcement and one for the Kitchen Division champion. We also have to look at scouting, because that has also not been successful in recent years.”
De Jonge: “In any case, we will not give up. Only when we are 4 points behind before the last game is it ready. We now have two tough games ahead of us with FC Twente and PSV and then we have two important duels with FC “Emmen and Excelsior. We should actually win those last two, because then we will have had all our competitors. We must be fully behind it as supporters in the coming period, because that should never be the problem.”
Groningen is in last place in the Eredivisie with 12 points from nineteen games, 4 points behind the safe fifteenth place.
