RIO DE JANEIRO – The Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the world and a symbol of hope, love and resilience for many people.
Despite its iconic status, the Brazilian Statue of Jesus Christ has suffered significant damage over the years.
In 2008, the statue was struck by lightning and crushed its right thumb. In 2014, another lightning strike caused damage to his head.
