The Surinamese authorities have called on shops to remain closed on Saturday.
Earlier today, a protest outside parliament turned violent, after which a group of demonstrators managed to storm the government building. In addition, the police even shot to restore peace:
A group of demonstrators entered the building and caused destruction. After the police forced the rioters out of the building, rioting and looting broke out in the downtown area.
Protect democracy
President Chan Santokhi strongly condemns this and says he will do everything possible to protect the rule of law and democratic institutions.
The demonstrators demanded the resignation of the president and vice president because of the poor economic situation in the country.
