ABU DHABI – The Catholic Community of Sant’Egidio and Kenyan peace leader Shamsa Abu Bakar Fadhil (Mama Shamsa) was named the recipient of the Zayed Award for Human Fraternity 2023. The decision was announced by a jury in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday (31/1/2023).
This year is the fourth event since the Zayed Award for Human Fraternity was held in 2019.
The Zayed Award 2023 is given as a form of appreciation for the contribution of the award recipients in creating a more peaceful and compassionate world through enhancing the values of human brotherhood.
Awards were also given for their contributions in providing inspiring role models to strengthen the foundations of coexistence in harmony and peace.

Just to note, the community of Sant’Egidio is a humanitarian organization based in Rome, Italy. This organization is spread across 73 countries in Europe, Africa, the United States, and Asia.
The Community of Sant’Egidio has made a major contribution in facilitating conflict resolution, negotiations and efforts to spread peace through religious diplomacy and cultural dialogue in many places in the world, from Guatemala to Mozambique.
The Zayed Award 2023 is also given for Sant’Edigio’s role in providing community services and assistance to refugees and supporting them to be able to mix positively with the recipient country’s communities through the “Humanitarian Corridor” initiative which aims to provide support to community groups most suffering from poverty around the world .
Meanwhile Shamsa Abu Bakar Fadhil or known as “Mama Shamsa” is an activist and promoter of peace in Kenya.
The reason for giving the Zayed Award 2023 to him is his efforts to nurture and protect young people from violence, crime and extremism through counselling, guidance and training.
