BEIJING – If investigative journalist Seymour Hersh’s report on Washington’s involvement in the Nord Streams explosion is true, then the United States (US) must explain itself to the world community.
Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) spokesperson Mao Ning revealed this on Friday (10/2/2023).
On Wednesday, Pulitzer Prize winner Hersh published a report saying US Navy divers during NATO’s Baltop exercises in the summer of 2022 planted explosives to destroy the Nord Stream pipeline, which Norway activated three months later.
According to the report, US President Joe Biden decided to sabotage Nord Streams after more than nine months of secret discussions with the national security team.
“If the investigation’s conclusions are correct, then US behavior is unacceptable,” the Chinese diplomat told reporters.

He noted Washington must assume responsibility and “explain itself to the world community.”
The explosion of the Nord Stream pipeline made European countries get rid of dependence on gas supplies from Russia.
The European Union then buys most of the gas from the United States (US), although at a higher price.
Russia says the US is the party that will most benefit from the explosion of the Nord Stream gas pipeline.
