MOSCOW – Cargo traffic through the Zabaykalsk-Manchuria border crossing on the Russia-China border reached a record high in January.
Mutual trade between the two countries is expected to grow even more amid the easing of COVID-19 restrictions in China, according to the Russian Consulate General in Harbin on Saturday (4/2/2023).
“Earlier this year saw a record high volume of cargo traffic through the Russia-China border. According to the Harbin (China) Railway (Group), around 1.5 million tons of cargo were transported through the Zabaykalsk-Manchuria railway border crossing during the first month of 2023, which 82 .9% higher than January last year,” the Russian Consulate General said on Telegram.

The consulate added that coal exports from Russia to China have doubled over the past month compared to January 2022, with around 10,000 tonnes of coal delivered daily to the Manchuria railway station.
“The supply of Russian fertilizers across the border has increased by 41% ahead of the start of the agricultural season,” the consulate said.
Mutual trade between the two countries is expected to grow even more amid China’s recent easing of COVID-19 restrictions, according to the Russian consulate general.
The Zabaykalsk-Manchuria railway border crossing is the largest transportation hub on the Russia-China border, operating 24/7 despite the unstable epidemic situation in Chinese areas near the border. Last year, as many as 15 million tons of cargo passed through these checkpoints.
In December, the Chinese government began gradually easing its “zero tolerance” policy against the COVID-19 pandemic, which has been the strictest in the world for nearly three years.
That has a negative impact on the global economy, supply chains, tourism and exchanges between governments.
The easing of restrictions is expected to increase China’s trade with foreign partners.
The war in Ukraine appears to have further strengthened the political and economic ties between Russia and China.
