WASHINGTON, 07 FEB – “Two years ago, our democracy faced its greatest threat since the civil war. Today, although wounded, our democracy remains indomitable and intact”. It is one of the passages of US President Joe Biden’s speech on the state of the Union, according to advances released by the White House. “The history of America – he says – is a history of progress and resilience # 8230; We are the only country that has emerged from every crisis stronger than when it entered. That’s what we’re doing again.” And then: “Two years ago our economy was faltering”, instead “we created a record 12 million new jobs, more jobs created in two years than any president has ever created in four years. Two years ago, Covid shut down our businesses, shut down our schools, and robbed us of so much. Today Covid no longer controls our lives. Biden also launches a bipartisan appeal to Republicans: “If we could work together in the last Congress, there is no reason why we can’t do it in this new one. People have sent us a clear message. Fight for fight, power for power, conflict for conflict gets us nowhere. This has always been my vision for the country: to restore the soul of the nation, rebuild its backbone, the middle class, to unite the country.” (HANDLE).
