The James Cameron thing will undoubtedly be studied in film history books: currently, no less than three of the five highest-grossing films in the history of cinema are signed by him. A milestone that has been reinforced with the rise to position 3 of ‘Avatar 2’, leaving behind his own ‘Titanic’. Historical figures that until now were not within the reach of any other creator in Hollywood.
In this way, the first sequel to ‘Avatar’ achieves the figure of 2,243.3 million dollars while ‘Titanic’ scratches 2,242.8 million (it will continue to rise thanks to its recent re-release in theaters, although not at the speed of ‘The water path’). Gone are ‘Titanic’ and ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’, while ahead are ‘Avengers: Endgame’ (2,799.4 million) and ‘Avatar’ itself (2,923.7 million).
Disney: a true colossus
Of course, this new ranking says a lot about Cameron and his ability to bill one blockbuster after another (will we end up seeing ‘Avatar 3’ enter that top of the box office world?), but even more about Disney. Because the classic Disney of a few years ago hardly has movies in the Top 10 (just the remake of ‘The Lion King’ in ninth place). But after the acquisitions of the last few years (ie Marvel, Lucasfilm, Fox) things change: the five films in the Top 5 are from Disney.
And that’s not all: if we go to the Top 10, where Marvel movies and ‘Star Wars’ abound, there is only one movie that does not belong to Disney: ‘Jurassic World’, from Universal. That is to say, 90% of the highest grossing films in history are from Disney (although historically, some such as ‘Avatar’ or ‘Titanic’ were not when they were released): clearly we are facing a monopoly on movie hits. Everyone will have to ask themselves to what extent this benefits us viewers
