The Israeli army killed at least five Palestinians on Monday during a military operation in the Aqabet Jabr refugee camp in Gericho in the central West Bank (Israel claims it killed seven, the governor of Gericho confirmed five dead). Israel claimed that all those killed were armed: that some belonged to Hamas, the radical group that controls the Gaza Strip, and that they had been involved in an armed attack carried out a few days ago against the Israeli army (in the attack not there had been dead). The Israeli army said it arrested a Hamas leader during the operation Shaker Amara.
There have been continuous attacks and violence between Israelis and Palestinians for weeks, the likes of which have not been seen for a long time. Tensions have increased especially after the inauguration of the new Israeli government of Benjamin Netanyahu, the most right-wing in Israel’s history, in which various ministries and important roles have been entrusted to politicians who are much discussed for their positions of open hostility towards the Palestinians.
