At least 36 people died in the state of São Paulo in southeastern Brazil on Sunday as a result of the many landslides and floods caused by heavy rains that have occurred in the area. Several areas of the state have been isolated by the damage that has made many roads unusable and there are hundreds of people displaced. The conditions are making rescue and interventions to restore the roads difficult: there are an unknown number of people stranded in houses or other buildings that rescuers cannot reach and it is believed that the dead may be more than those registered so far. Heavy rains are expected to continue at least through Monday in the coastal area of the state of São Paulo, where several events planned for the Brazilian carnival have been canceled.
