Just over two hours from the end of the second day of collective testing in Bahrain, Aston Martin has formalized the line-up with which it will tackle the final tomorrow. A choice that could also be an important clue on Lance Stroll’s health in view of next week’s Bahrain Grand Prix.
After allowing Fernando Alonso to take to the track in both of today’s sessions, the Silverstone team has in fact decided to send reserve Felipe Drugovich back on track, who will contest the morning session in the AMR23, before handing over the wheel again to the Spanish veteran.
Yesterday evening he announced that he had chosen to give Alonso the whole day waiting to have clearer indications on Stroll, who broke his wrist while cycling in Malaga and was subsequently also operated on by Dr. Xavier Mir in Barcelona to stabilize the fracture, but for which recovery times were not yet clear.
The fact that Drugovich will be back in the car tomorrow suggests that the news that arrived today on the Canadian driver, son of the great patron Lawrence, was not what he hoped for. Also because otherwise it wouldn’t make too much sense to continue to let the reigning Formula 2 champion accumulate experience, who would be making his absolute debut in a Formula 1 Grand Prix next Sunday if he were called to race.
Surely more will be known in the next few hours, but the road seems to be drawn towards Stroll’s forfeit, which however would represent a very good opportunity for the young Brazilian up-and-comer.
