Although inflation in the country recorded a rebound in January for the second consecutive month and reached an annualized rate of 7.91%President Andrés Manuel López Obrador considered that it is not to be alarmed and predicted that in the coming months it will drop.
“We think that it will go down more, we are not going to stop facing the inflationary problem, it worries us and occupies us, but it is not to be alarmed,” he argued.
The holder of the federal Executive Branch maintained that he is respectful of the policy of the Bank of Mexico that it is autonomous; although he suggested that focus more on economic growth and not just deal with inflation control.
“That formula that if there is an increase in inflation, increase interest rates, which is what is applied worldwide, is orthodox and other actions would have to be thought of; For example, what we are doing to support productive activity, not to increase the prices of gasoline, diesel, gas, electricity; What we are carrying out is not recommended by the Bank of Mexico. They should be more concerned with driving growth,” he said.
López Obrador did not specify if they contemplate applying additional measures to control the prices of products. The National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) indicated that the National Consumer Price Index had a variation in January 0.68% compared to the previous month. The acceleration of inflation was partly due to the rise registered by some foods such as chicken, lemon, and bananas; and water supplies, low-octane gasoline, restaurants, and housing.
Regarding the 7.8% increase in the collection of highway booths, the president reported that they detected four cases of highways in Nayarit and Sinaloa where the concessionaires apply a higher increase; He specified that he instructed the Communications and Transport Infrastructure Secretariat to correct this situation.
