The 100,000th electric car registered in our country is a Polestar 2. This was calculated by interest group EV Belgium together with Polestar and Arval, the leasing company that delivered the electric car. The owner of the 100,000th EV is Jeroen Cludts, who received his new company car as an employee of design furniture manufacturer Vitra.
“200,000 this year”
According to EV Belgium, the number of registrations of electric cars is almost exponential. The 200,000th car will probably be registered in 2023, EV Belgium expects that the threshold of 500,000 electric cars will be exceeded in 2025.
According to EV Belgium, the electric transition is therefore proceeding without any significant problems: “We are seeing an increase in the number of orders, there is a rapid growth in the number of companies active in e-mobility, and the installation of charging stations at companies and at home is going smoothly. The roll-out of public charging infrastructure is also evolving rapidly, with the exception of the Walloon part of the country,” says spokesman Jochen De Smet.
Commercial vehicle market
The almost exponential increase in the number of electric cars in our country is largely driven by the business market. For example, figures from the Febiac automobile federation show that almost 9 out of 10 registrations (87.1%) of electric cars last year were in the name of companies and self-employed persons. Private buyers made up only 12.9 percent of the new EV market in 2022.
