One of the mysteries of Avatar: The Sense of Water is how Spider’s mother died. This question has now been answered through a new prequel comic.
Jack Champion’s played Spider. The character who played a major role in Avatar: The Sense of Water, being one of the adopted children of Jake Sully and Neytiri and having a direct link to the sequel’s villain, Lieutenant Quaritch.
In a shocking twist, Quaritch is revealed to be Spider’s biological father. This twist led to questionable choices for Spider throughout the sequel, leaving many wondering how his final decision in the film’s finale will affect future Avatar movies.
While others debate the identity of Kiri’s father, new details have been revealed about the death of Spider’s mother.
How did Spider’s mother die before the sequel?
The prequel comic Avatar: The High Groundrevealed that Paz Socorro is Spider’s mother, a Scorpion pilot for Resources Development Audition (RDA).
A brief reference to Socorro was made in Avatar: The Sense of Water when Quaritch first meets Miles. However, it was never explained what happened to her.
The aforementioned prequel comic revealed details of Socorro’s backstory before the events of the sequel and during the first film and confirms that she was killed during “the last great battle”, showing her impaled during the climactic battle of the first film:
What implications will this event have in the next deliveries?
Avatar: The Sense of Water revealed that Spider longs for a family, even though Jake Sully and Neytiri adopted him. This leads to his decision to help Quaritch and keep him alive at the end of the sequel, despite knowing the ramifications of his actions.
It is unknown if Spider is aware of how his mother died. But it is possible that Jake opened up and told her that he is partly responsible for the death of his mother. While this issue may have been on the back burner in the sequel. Meeting Quaritch would have changed Spider’s perspective on the matter. Let’s remember that this clone only has memories from before the final battle, so it is unknown if he is also aware of what happened to the mother of his son. Finding out how he died would add another reason to avenge part of his own death.
That Spider helps Quaritch could be the first indication that he ends up betraying Sully in future installments. Knowing that Jake is responsible for his mother’s death could also be used as motivation to do so. With Quaritch using Paz’s death to his advantage to gain the trust of his son.
Hopefully, Spider’s friendship with Kiri and the rest of Jake and Neytiri’s children will keep him from betraying them and the Na’vi. But you never know.
Avatar: The Sense of Water can still be seen in theaters and has already accumulated just over 1,700 million dollars, currently occupying the 7th position as the highest-grossing film in film history below the first film, and titles such as Titanic , Avengers 3 and 4, Spider-man: No way Home and Star Wars: The awakening of the force.
