The planet Coruscant went through many changes after the events of the first Star Wars trilogy.
After the death of Emperor on the Battle of EndorStar Wars canon and Legends have different versions of what happened to the planet Coruscant during the era of the new republic.

In the continuity of Star Wars Legends, Coruscant Happened to be called Imperial city after the fall of the Republic, and became the secret home of the Lusankyaa star destroyer that Palpatine which I had as an escape ship. In the current canon, Palpatine turned the Jedi Temple into the Imperial Palace. as seen on return of the jedi, Coruscant turned against the Empire after Palpatine’s death, and the revolts were resolved in canon in a civil war, but would be brutally suppressed in Legends. Later, Coruscant would end up becoming the capital of the New Republic in both continuities, albeit with some differences.
The importance of Coruscant in Star Wars
In Legends, the Empire split into various warlord factions after the events of the original trilogy. One of the factions, led by Ysanne Isard, controlled the Imperial Center, which remained a place of great importance for two years after the Battle of Endor. In 6 ABY, Coruscant would be under New Republic control, but Coruscant’s importance to the Imperial factions would not end here. Isard, Grand Admiral Thrawn, and the reborn Emperor Palpatine would lead the siege of Coruscant.and the latter would take care of forcing the New Republic to temporarily adopt Da Soocha V y Nespis VIII as their capital worlds.
In canon, the riots shown in Return of the Jedi plunged the planet into civil war, with citizens rebelling against the Imperials. Although the Empire did not split into the same warlord factions as in Legends, the government struggled to maintain control over its capital, with Gallius Rax trying to ensure the demise of the Empire in order to plant the seeds of its rebirth in the year following the Battle of Endor.
The New Republic changes its capital
In Legends, Coruscant would be the capital of the New Republic until 27 ABY, when the yuuzhan vong terraformed the world, causing My Calamari was the new capital. The Galactic Federation of Free Alliances he would recapture Coruscant and use it as his capital. Later, Coruscant would end up being claimed by Darth Krayt’s Sith Empire and the Galactic Federation Triumvirate..
Coruscant would also not remain the capital of the New Republic in canon continuity. The New Republic will have a rotating capital, with Coruscant being the first. In the events of the last Star Wars trilogy, the capital of the New Republic was Hosnian Prime.
